Journalism is aggregating, writing, editing and presenting of news or new articles for widespread distribution, typically in periodical prints publications and broadcast news media, for the purpose of informing the audience. So then who is a journalist? He or she is someone who performs these functions in the best way he or she can after undergoing necessary qualities and getting required training.
In recent times, journalists have been faced with different threats as regards the existence of journalism but journalism has rather proven to be resilient, always changing and evolving with the new trends in the society. The sociology of the media has shown that media, journalism inclusive and its entire works have transformed greatly and will still continue to change due to the new technologies that are springing up day by day.
As a result of these technologies which brought about media convergence, we now have what we call the modern journalism, new journalism and futuristic journalism. All these are the new trends and it is what is in vogue because everyone is going digital both the audience and the media and we have the responsibilities as the media to satisfy how audiences how they want it.
It is expected of us as the fourth tier of government and the mouthpiece of the society which is our underlying and primary function to move along with new changes going on in the society. Therefore I as a journalist have a role to play in making journalism continue to exist. What is then my role?
First of all as a passionate journalist it is required of me to make the profession of journalism a respected profession by exhibiting required qualities and following and strictly adhering to the various rules and regulations, laws, ethics and principles that are in this profession and bring prestige to this profession.
Data, investigative and interpretative journalism are the tools which journalist now use to render their appropriate function so therefore as a futuristic journalist I should be able to give investigative reports that are credible and reliable on issues that border on public interest to the public, render analysis of news and interpreting news that are not easily understood to the public.
Futuristic journalism is embedded in digital technologies so as a futuristic journalist, I should have a good understanding of new digital technologies, and I should be able to delve into data journalism which is journalism with adequate facts and figures with the use of appropriate info graphics
Basically, the role of a futuristic journalist remains as before, that is to facilitate democracy, serve as the watchdog, give unbiased reports, provide forum for public comment, etc. My role therefore as a futuristic journalist is to make that entirely possible but through the use of the new media.
